Shadow Camp was an ambitious (possibly overly so!) project I spent much of the spring organizing, and most of the summer running. The idea was to present a showcase of shadow puppetry, to include performances and workshops for artists and the public, in the context of two festivals in the US: Firefly, an annual summer festival in Vermont that I founded together with some friends 10 years ago, and Artscape, a huge public arts festival that takes place each summer in my hometown of Baltimore, Maryland. The project was excellent as an experience in organizing an arts event (I had never done anything on this scale before), but was also really difficult, both in ways I could have controlled better (i.e. insisting on getting the funding I needed, finding an adequate number of volunteers), and in ways I couldn't (i.e. the weather!). I don't know if I would try to do something similar again, as it was really overwhelming, but I definitely learned that I enjoy a lot of the kind of work that was involved (teaching and community arts organization), and would like it to make up a larger part of my practice in the future.
